Loch Conn Road Run
October 2006

“Why don’t we have a St Stephen’s Day road run?”, asked someone at our last monthly meeting.  Well, October 1st must be some saint’s or other’s day, so why wait until Christmas, said the rest of us.  Consequently on a warm Sunday morn, the sun peeping through the clouds would witness a gathering of 9 classic cars, 11 vintage tractors and 4 aged motorcycles in the car park of Mayo North Heritage Centre, Crossmolina, which is our usual lair.

There were Fergies, David Browns and Massey Fergusons, including an MF 25 and an 825, both French built.  There was also a BMC mini-tractor, but unusually no Fords.  Bikes included a BMW outfit and a 1927 BSA B27, which had a suprising turn of speed for a near 80 year old machine.
After a light brunch of sandwiches, apple pie and coffee we set off, or most of us did apart from us biker boys who had to gently wake a 1951 BSA C11 slumbering with a flat battery.  It was coaxed into life, and in true tortoise and hare fashion we arrived at the first halt just in time to see the tractors start off again.  At this point we discovered that the C11 rear tyre was also heading towards the flat state, obviously in sympathy with the battery, so by the time this was inflated the rest of them had disappeared down the road altogether.
Owing to an unscheduled halt to allow the C11 to cool down for a while (it really wasn’t it’s best day), we arrived at Brogan’s pub in Knockmore for a lunch break.  I’ve no idea what was on the menu as by the time I got to the trough the feeding frenzy was over, and I had to make do with Guinness.  Well you have to make allowances, those who had forgotten to bring between-stops sandwiches would have gone without a bite for almost two hours.
Off again at 2pm sharp for the final leg to Murphy’s in Lahardane, where a fine 3 course dinner awaited us, for we had scarcely a morsel to eat all day.  The two recovery trailers towed behind the marshalls really only came along for the ride as they were not required.

This was our second road run this year; check out www.mayovintage.org
because who knows, St Stephen may get one on his day yet!
